- Progressivo brasileiro: estar + gerúndio To say what is happening now, Brazil uses estar + -ndo (estou fazendo)
- Gostar de "To like" is gostar DE — the preposition is obligatory
- Futuro falado: ir + infinitivo In speech the future is vou fazer, not the synthetic farei
- Ficar: virar, permanecer, localizar-se ficar is a third copula: become, stay, and be located
- Pretérito perfeito simples: falei, fiz The everyday past for finished actions: eu falei, ele fez
- Pretérito imperfeito: falava, fazia The past for habits, descriptions and background — contrasts with the simple past
- Dativo no falado: pra ele, não lhe Brazilians say "dei pra ele", not "dei-lhe" — lhe is bookish
- Imperativo: fale! / não fale! For você, the command is the subjunctive form — and the negative uses the same form
- Comparativo e superlativo mais ... do que for comparisons, o mais ... de for the superlative
- Diminutivo: -inho, -zinho The diminutive rarely means “small” — it softens, warms or downplays
- Demonstrativos: este / esse / aquele (isto / isso / aquilo) Demonstratives: this / that / that (over there)
- Negação: não, nada, nunca, ninguém, nenhum + dupla negativa How to say no: put "não" before the verb, and keep it even with nada/nunca/ninguém (double negative)
